UNDERSTAND THE WORK

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

A forward deployed engineer works close to a customer’s problem while delivering software. The work can include discovery, integration, implementation, deployment and production support. It combines engineering decisions with communication and product judgment. Employers organize these teams differently: ask whether you will own production code, customer outcomes, reusable platform improvements or all three.

FDE, solutions engineering and deployment roles

Forward deployed software engineering can overlap with solutions engineering or implementation, but titles alone do not define the amount of coding or delivery ownership. Look for concrete responsibilities after a demonstration succeeds. A role that deploys inference infrastructure may differ substantially from one building agent workflows. Compare the customers, technology stack and expected balance between internal product work and delivery.

Demonstrate both delivery and communication

Prepare an example where you translated an ambiguous request into a working system. Explain the requirements you clarified, the code you wrote and the tradeoffs you communicated. Include deployment, failure handling and how the work could be reused. Be clear about your own contribution. A concise technical write-up and a discussion of customer constraints can help an interviewer assess the combined skill set.

Read remote and travel terms together

An FDE role may allow remote work while requiring customer visits, office time or particular time zones. A list of several hiring cities does not mean unrestricted worldwide eligibility. Confirm travel frequency, customer-site expectations and work authorization before applying. Compare any salary range in its stated location and currency; do not treat a broad multi-location band as a guaranteed offer.

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Your career
questions.

Is “forward deployment engineer” the same as “forward deployed engineer”?

Employers use both variants, along with FDE and deployed engineer. They may describe similar customer-facing engineering work, but responsibilities, travel and production ownership determine the actual role.

Are forward deployed engineer jobs remote?

Some are, while others are hybrid or office-based. Remote FDE roles can still require travel or customer-site work. Each listing links to the employer’s arrangement and eligibility details.
